We are pleased to announced the release of our latest book—Out of the Kansas Dust: Kansas History Retold Through Famous and Forgotten Poems by Michelle Lindsey.

Out of the Kansas Dust

From its earliest days, Kansas inspired passion.

Kansans of old have left behind a rich legacy of verse, giving us rare glimpses into the pageant of the past. Through poetry we can relive the daily triumphs and tragedies of pre-1920s Kansas.

Out of the Kansas Dust makes Kansas history accessible to students of history and casual readers alike. Over 80 poems explore the history of the Sunflower State, from pre-settlement times through the Bleeding Kansas era through the days of progressive reforms to the end of World War I. These poems include works from a wide range of sources:

  • Renowned wordsmiths such as John Greenleaf Whittier.
  • Poets of statewide fame such as Joel Moody and Eugene Ware.
  • Lesser-known writers whose works lie buried in newspapers of the past.

To aid the reader, introductory notes capture the historical context of each poem and explain a bygone way of life. The notes also provide insight into the unique perspectives of the poets themselves.

A timeline, a map of historic Kansas, and biographies of poets and key historical figures round out the book.

In addition, Out of the Kansas Dust is available in hardcover, making it sure to please that Kansas enthusiast or history buff on your gift list this Christmas.

Journey into history and follow in the footsteps of explorers, pioneers, reformers, and patriots as their voices call to us out of the Kansas dust.
